Over time, the fat around the eyes decreases, leading to a hollowed-out appearance, which contributes to an aging look. Augmentation blepharoplasty is a facial aesthetic surgery technique that involves injecting fat deeply into the eyelids to add volume using your own fat. This technique complements traditional blepharoplasty to harmonize the final result.
Augmentation Blepharoplasty
Augmentation Blepharoplasty is a procedure that adds volume around the eyes to give them a refreshed, rejuvenated, and less tired appearance. Augmentation Blepharoplasty improves hooded or drooping eyelids or eye bags by removing excess fat or skin.
Augmentation Blepharoplasty is one of the most common functional and cosmetic procedures performed in facial plastic surgery. The recovery time is short, and the procedure is low risk. An Augmentation Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper, lower or both eyelids.

What Is Augmentation Blepharoplasty?
Indications for Augmentation Blepharoplasty in Eyelid Surgery
Augmentation blepharoplasty addresses the loss of volume in the eyelids, a sign of aging. This type of eyelid lift is particularly suitable for patients who naturally have slightly sunken eyes. This surgical intervention softens their features, firms up their appearance, and enhances their gaze.
Which concerns can Augmentation Blepharoplasty address?
Droopy eyelids:
Restores a more alert, young appearance by lifting and tightening the upper eyelids.
Hooded eyes:
Reduces the hooded effect by removing extra skin from the top eyelids, creating a more defined crease and a lighter appearance.
Visual impairment due to excess skin:
Increases the field of view by lifting the drooping skin of the top eyelids that could be blocking vision.
Eye bags:
Reduces puffiness and produces a smoother contour by removing or repositioning extra fat beneath the eyes.
Excess eyelid skin:
Eliminates extra skin from the eyelids to enhance comfort and attractiveness.
Excess skin around the eyes:
Makes the area around the eyes appear more open and refreshed by reducing loose skin.
The Procedure for Augmentation Blepharoplasty with Dr. Lyor Hanan
Augmentation blepharoplasty is a relatively simple procedure, typically lasting about 45 minutes. This intervention is performed:
- Under general anesthesia if upper and lower blepharoplasty is also planned
- Under local anesthesia for upper blepharoplasty alone
The surgeon extracts a small amount of fat from the abdomen or inner knees (liposuction) using a micro-cannula. The fat is then rinsed and defibrosed, making it particularly fluid. It is then treated with a special filter before being injected deeply with a micro-cannula into the targeted eyelid area. This technique is well-tolerated and offers a natural result.
This procedure may cause bruising and swelling of the eyelids, which may last a few days but resolve naturally.
Post-Operative Care for Augmentation Blepharoplasty
After eyelid surgery, you will need to use eye drops and apply ice to protect your eyelids and reduce swelling. You will also need to rest and avoid wearing contact lenses until the incisions have healed, which typically takes about two weeks. During this time, you may experience bruising and swelling around the eyes, which should start to improve after a few days.
You may also experience dryness, irritation, and blurred vision. These side effects are generally temporary and will subside within a few weeks.
Results of Augmentation Blepharoplasty
Most of our patients notice a significant improvement in the appearance of their eyes after augmentation blepharoplasty. The final results are visible after a few weeks, once the swelling and bruising have subsided.
When combined with traditional blepharoplasty, augmentation blepharoplasty provides a perfectly harmonious result by restoring the original volume of the eyelid and removing any excess skin that may have accumulated over time.
